With the foundation of Nova Roma aka Constantinople as the new capital of the Roman Empire, a new ear started that shaped European history until modern times. This originates in the decision by Emperor Constantine I to move the imperial residence to the city of Byzantion in AD 324. To marks its 1700th anniversary, the German Archaeological Institute is organising a discussion evening that aims to shed light on various aspects of Constantinople's historic development. In the format of a roundtable, the three speakers—Albrecht Berger (Munich), Alessandra Ricci (Istanbul), and Natalia Poulou (Thessaloniki)—will not only illustrate the motives behind this imperial building project, but also discuss the impact of this event on the urban planning and organisation of the city, as well as its effects on the wider geopolitical and economic landscape.
