In this workshop, Grammy nominated composer and New England Conservatory faculty member Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol will introduce the fundamental principles of makam, a close relative of the Byzantine echos. Participants will learn about Sanlıkol’s approach to the microtonal aspects of this tradition as well as the concepts of melodic direction and vocal improvisation. Participants will perform several pieces and try out vocal improvisations throughout the workshop.
